About eColloquium
Centre for Civil Society (CCS) is conducting an eColloquium on The Limits of Democracy on 22nd November 2020.
What is an eColloquium?
A CCS eColloquium is an online in-depth discussion centred on a chosen theme. The colloquium provides participants with an opportunity to disentangle themselves from the distractions of everyday life to reflect on issues of fundamental and enduring importance.
Unlike a conventional conference, eColloquium explores a specific theme by discussing a common reader (a curated collection of readings), that is read before the program. The shared inquiry is guided by a moderator who encourages thinking, asks probing questions, keeps things moving, but does not indulge in one-way monologues, lectures and does not advocate her/his own personal biases and interpretation of the texts. The purpose of the discussions is to challenge participants to examine, refine, and develop their own ideas by engaging with others.
About the Topic
Democracy was envisioned as a system to restrict the State and to minimise the conflicts of differences among people. However, it is pertinent to understand the genesis of this decision-making problem, the economics of consensus, and the relationship of State with the individual.
Can subjective individual interests be overshadowed by a democratic vote? In this eColloquium, we will explore the economics of democratic decision making, the role of ideology in Constitution-making, and the way in which Constitutions can incentivize market-based competition.
The eColloquium will seek to understand the aforementioned issues by reading and deliberating on the works of scholars like James Buchanan, Gordon Tollock, etc.
Perks: A Certificate of participation will be provided to the participants of eColloquium, who successfully attend and contribute to the discussions in all the sessions during the eColloquium.
