CONFERENCE PRE-NOTE

Women are a great source of infinite power and strength. While one woman can create a story, millions coming together will create history. Women and Girls make up more than half the world’s population and are often more deeply impacted by poverty, lack of opportunity, climate change, food insecurity and lack of health care. Ever since the discourse on women’s rights were identified as human rights there have been meaningful changes in law and policy leading to a greater awareness of rights and entitlements among women of certain segments of society. However issues of severe discrimination and disempowerment are very much prevalent. Empowerment of women and girls is not only important for an equitable society, it is essential to build stronger economies, achieve internationally agreed development goalsBeijing+20: A World Mobilised, improve quality of life of women, men, families and communities. As per the National Policy for the Empowerment of Women, the principle of gender equality has been enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles of the State Policy. The Constitution not only guarantees equality to women, but also empowers the States to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women. Although various legislations have been formulated for the empowerment of women in India, but we cannot evade the fact that gender discrimination is deep rooted in the Indian society. Mere formulation of rules and regulations, building theoretical frameworks would not suffice to achieve the object of women empowerment, rather there is a need to build women's capacity by providing training and non-formal education to access and exterminate the root causes of both social and financial inequalities beginning from local communities. This would facilitate them to achieve self-reliance and sustainability.

This conference has been planned to achieve the following objectives:
  • To explore the negotiations for bridging the gap between the regulations and the ground reality of the situation of women in Indian society.
  • To talk over the role of women in India's wide-ranging growth and how women empowerment can upturn the velocity of inclusive growth, through aptitude building.
  • To converse the problems to be tackled to rationalize the existing programmes on women empowerment.
  • To understand the negotiations which would result in some tangible solution, in turn will help the regulators as well as the society to reinforce the position of women.
