Job Description

As our first legal hire in India, you will be the first line of legal support and guidance to SCI. You will also be a valued member of the overall SparkCognition Legal Department, reporting to the General Counsel of SparkCognition but also working with leadership in the Bangalore office to accomplish objectives.

You will work as part of the SparkCognition Legal Department to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations, including providing local legal advice to your colleagues. Every day, the SparkCognition Legal Department collaborates with other organizations within the company to ensure that the company reaches its business goals in a legal and compliant manner.

The Legal Department handles matters including but not limited to customer and vendor agreements, corporate matters, mergers & acquisitions, intellectual property, financing, employment, governance, compliance, and public company readiness.

Eligibility & Requirements

  • LLB from a reputable university in India
  • 5-10 years of experience as an attorney, preferably in an in-house legal role at a technology company.
  • Knowledge of Indian laws and regulations related to AI, data privacy, intellectual property, labor, and corporate matters.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills, with experience in negotiating tenders, contracts, and agreements.
  • Ability to help administer compliance programs following global best practices in managing due diligence procedures for compliance with anti-bribery, anti-money laundering, economic sanctions, data privacy and other critical laws and regulations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Ability to accommodate work hours involving international participants–time zones can get tricky when folks from multiple continents are involved.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal skills in English. Familiarity with Hindi and/or Kannada will be viewed favorably.
  • Familiarity with AI and machine learning would be a plus.
  • Familiarity with US laws and regulations, particularly the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, would be a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting, reviewing, and overseeing logistics of legal documents, including contracts, agreements, policies, requests for proposals (RFPs), and tenders.
  • Advising on legal matters related to business operations in India, including but not limited to data privacy implications, intellectual property, and labor matters.
  • Managing and monitoring litigation and disputes involving SCI or operations in India.
  • Conducting legal research and staying up-to-date with changes in laws and regulations that affect the company’s operations.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and developing policies and procedures to mitigate legal risks.
  • Collaborating with other departments, including finance, HR, operations, sales, services, and engineering to protect the company’s interests.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of global compliance processes and policies.
  • Assisting on corporate secretarial matters, such as Indian board and shareholder meetings.
