The Court on May 10 had found the accused guilty of trespassing into the house of 23-year-old Vishnupriya and stabbing her to death in 2022.

Court in Kerala on May 13 sentenced Shyamjith M who was recently found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend Vishnupriya, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹2 lakh on him [State of Kerala v Shyamjith M].

Additional District and Sessions Judge AV Mridula also sentenced Shyamjith to 10 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 449 (house-trespass in order to commit offence punishable with death) of the Indian Penal Code.

"The sentence shall run concurrently," the Court in Thalassery said in its order.

On May 10, Shyamjith had been convicted by the Court in the case registered by Panur Police Station in 2022.

On October 22, 2022 when Vishnupriya was on a call with her friend at her home in Kannur District, Shyamjith had entered her house, armed with a hammer and knife.

He had then killed the victim by slitting her throat, hitting her head with the hammer and stabbing her multiple times.

According to the prosecution, Shyamjith had previously been in a relationship with Vishnupriya, a pharmacist, and wanted to take revenge on her for breaking up with him.

A total of 73 witnesses were presented during the trial by prosecution, which argued that Shyamjith had no remorse for the brutal murder.
