The Supreme Court Observer (SCO) is inviting applications from law graduates/post-graduates for the post of Associate Editor, for its office in Bangalore.

About the SCO (Supreme Court Observer)

Supreme Court Observer (SCO) reports on and makes sense of the Supreme Court of India. They track selected cases: access and share court submissions; produce daily reports of court proceedings, and analyse decisions in plain language.

They seek to enable common citizens to develop an understanding of the role of the Court in Indian public life through contemporaneous reporting and by exploring a living archive of the Court’s work.

About the Role

The Associate Editor (AE) will, together with the SCO team, identify and track cases that have the potential to significantly impact the development of law or otherwise impact the general public. The AE will write and edit reports on cases, case background pages, petition summaries, and plain English versions of judgments and orders.

The AE will regularly produce content for the Journal section including sharp, concise and accessible analytical pieces, quantitative analysis of court data posts and podcasts on important judgments. The AE will additionally write material for other sections of the website such as Supreme Court judge profiles and plain language guides to Court procedure.

The AE will develop and implement a communications strategy along with the rest of the team that will direct SCO’s social and digital media presence. They will also assist with other outreach strategies such as organising workshops, seminars, conferences and other events.

The role is based out of Supreme Court Observer (SCO’s) office in Bangalore.

Eligibility

  • Individual passionate about the Supreme Court’s work and its impact on India’s constitutional democracy and committed to communicating this to the public at large.
  • Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in Law with a strong academic background.
  • The candidate should preferably have a Masters’ degree in either Law or Journalism and 2 to 3 years of experience in legal journalism or publishing.

Desirable Qualities

  • Journalistic and literary flair.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Ability to deconstruct complex legal materials and developments and communicate them to the wider public through accessible and attractive prose.
